You’d think brand-new cars with all the latest tech would be harder to steal. But according to new figures, that’s not the case, and one specific model is now top of thieves’ wishlists.
Motor thefts overall dropped slightly last year, but thefts of new cars (less than three years old) actually rose by 6.6 per cent. The most surprising target? The Toyota Hilux.
The famously tough pickup, made legendary by Top Gear for being virtually indestructible, has seen a massive 549 per cent jump in thefts of newer models. In 2024 alone, 584 Hiluxes were reported stolen.
Why the Hilux?
Organised crime gangs are going after Hiluxes for one big reason: they’re worth a fortune overseas. The Hilux is in huge demand in parts of Africa, especially the Democratic Republic of Congo, where nearly 40 per cent of all UK-stolen cars end up.
These vehicles are rugged, reliable, and ideal for tough conditions, making them a prime export. Criminals are using advanced tech to bypass security systems and quickly ship the vehicles abroad.
Who’s being hit?
Police say farmers and rural drivers are the most common targets. Forces in Bedfordshire, Nottinghamshire, and North Yorkshire have all issued warnings after multiple thefts in short periods. One spree in Luton saw 11 stolen over just a few days.
Toyota’s UK team has admitted this is a growing issue. They've already invested £10 million in anti-theft tech like trackers and immobilisers, and are offering free tracking services on certain models. But they admit no car is completely safe.
Meanwhile, JLR is turning things around
While Toyota is under pressure, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has had some good news. They’ve spent £15 million in the last 18 months upgrading their security systems, and it's working.
For example, thefts of the Range Rover Evoque (less than three years old) dropped by 77 per cent last year. Not bad for a brand that was once struggling to even get insured in parts of London because of high theft risk.
How to actually protect your car
Here are 13 expert-approved tips worth knowing, especially if you drive a pickup, a high-end car, or just park on the street:
- Always double-check your car is locked. Signal jammers can stop your fob from working.
- Never leave your engine running to defrost the windows. It’s illegal, and you won’t be insured if it gets stolen.
- Clear out your car. Valuables in view are a big invitation to thieves.
- Fit a tracker and alarm. Go for Thatcham-approved systems where possible.
- Old-school steering wheel and pedal locks still work as strong visual deterrents.
- Get a doorbell cam or CCTV. Motion-activated lights also help.
- Use your garage if you have one, and don’t leave the garage remote in the car.
- Park smart. Sideways, close to a wall, or block it in with another car.
- Choose trustworthy garages to avoid key cloning. Stick to ones with official accreditations.
- Use dashcams with cloud backup. Some also record when parked.
- Wipe your car’s data before selling. Make sure old accounts no longer have access.
- Watch out for part thieves. Some criminals are targeting parked cars and stripping wheels, mirrors and lights.
- Be cautious of crash scams. Stay alert in traffic, keep doors locked and leave space in front of you at junctions.
If you drive a Hilux or any other high-demand vehicle, don’t rely on the factory security alone. Thieves are using smarter tech and working in organised gangs. Taking a few extra steps now could save you a lot of stress and money later.
