Oh dear. The used Vauxhall Vectra hatchback has a problem. It is widely perceived as being anonymously styled, unremarkable to drive, and lacking status. Perhaps this is true. But thanks to the launch of its replacement, the Insignia, this large family workhorse is also great value for money. As such a 2006 example, which is one of the revised final generation, could be sitting on your drive from a temptingly modest £4,500. All of a sudden 'image' seems less important.

Now, we have established this hatchback is not the best handling or most stylish in the world - but let's resist the ever-popular Vectra bashing game and consider its virtues. Chief among these is practicality. The cabin is spacious and reasonably comfortable, there are no major reliability worries, it holds 1360-litres of luggage with the seats folded, and even basic versions have a nice specification. This includes six air-bags, air-con, cruise control, and a CD stereo.

The used Vauxhall Vectra's engines further boost its reputation. My favourite is the smooth and flexible 3.0-litre 181bhp V6. This, when teamed with six-speed manual transmission, propels this undervalued hatchback to 60mph in a respectable nine seconds. Not bad for a large, ageing, vehicle that averages a respectable 40mpg. Alternatively, choose the comparatively economical 1.9-litre 118bhp diesel manual version that averages 49mpg. Performance suffers though, as this takes a lengthy 11.2 seconds to reach 60mph. Still, think of the fuel saving.

There is very little 'right or wrong' when choosing a vehicle. The best option always depends on your individual needs and priorities. On this basis, if you only want a straightforward motorway mile muncher you could do worse than a used Vauxhall Vectra. It might not make you grin from ear to ear – but it will rarely make you cry either. It simply gets the job done.
