Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to extend the range of its upcoming electric G-Class EV

Mercedes is gearing up to boost the range of its new electric G-Class with a cutting-edge battery tech expected in two years. This new silicon-anode battery, developed with Sila Nanotechnologies, is set to significantly extend the 4x4's range, possibly reaching 400 miles or more. The current model, the G580 EQ, offers 292 miles with its 116kWh battery, but the new battery could increase capacity by 20-40%, giving a potential range of over 400 miles. This advancement could revolutionize future electric car development, says Mercedes' chief technology officer.

The new battery isn't just for the G580; it's also planned for other Mercedes EVs like the EQE and EQS. The G580, known during development as the EQG, is designed to maintain the classic G-Class experience while being powered by electricity. It boasts impressive off-road capabilities, including features like G-Turn and G-Steering for manoeuvrability and a 'transparent bonnet' function to aid obstacle navigation.

The battery, integrated into the frame, contributes to its structural integrity. Pricing for the G580 with EQ Technology hasn't been revealed yet, but it's expected to fall between the G450d and the high-performance Mercedes-AMG G63.
