Diners at one of Bath's historic hotels were met with an unusual sight after a car was stuck outside the basement

You can’t park there sir! Man arrested after car became wedged against basement of historic hotel

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a car became wedged against the basement windows of a historic hotel in Bath.

The teenager had managed crash through railings and trap his Kia Picanto outside the windows of the hotel at 5am on Sunday morning, much to the surprise of hotel guests.

A rescue crew freed one of the two occupants while the other was able to get out on their own.

The man was released on unconditional bail while investigations continue.

The BBC spoke to one hotel resident, Emily, who said: "We thought it might have been a small fire but we looked over the railings and there was a whole car fitted in there and people making jokes about parking - you can't really see how it got down there.

"There was quite a large section of the railings that were broken and some stonework had also been damaged, so you could see it must have been quite high impact.

"There was a fire engine and a few crew, but there didn't seem to be anything happening - I don't know if the fire crew were just guarding the site.

"The hotel was open - it was a bit strange because you could see through the window and there were people having their lunch and their afternoon tea above where the car was."
