Alfa Romeo’s striking new Cuorerosso concept combines a hybrid V6 with four-wheel drive, offering a tantalising glimpse of the Italian brand’s next generation of cars.

Alfa Romeo Cuorerosso hints at a thrilling future

Alfa Romeo has had a relatively quiet new-car pipeline over the past decade, but the next three years are set to bring a welcome burst of activity. With several new models planned, the Italian carmaker has an opportunity to refresh its range and remind buyers what makes the badge special.

The Giulia saloon and Stelvio SUV remain appealing cars, but both are now well into their second decade since their original launches. Replacements were initially planned as electric-only models, with launches expected earlier, but changing demand for EVs prompted Alfa Romeo to rethink its strategy and make room for combustion engines.

Meanwhile, the compact Junior uses an older PSA-era platform, while the Tonale has struggled to make a significant impact in the market. Fresh models are overdue, and the Cuorerosso offers an intriguing glimpse of what could come next.

Alfa Romeo Cuorerosso concept brings back the V6

Unveiled at the Paris motor show, the Cuorerosso takes a different approach from many of the electric-focused concepts on display. Under its dramatic bodywork sits Alfa Romeo's familiar V6 engine, paired with hybrid technology and four-wheel drive.

Alfa Romeo has yet to confirm production specifications or performance figures, so the concept's precise capabilities remain unknown. Its significance lies in the wider message, with the carmaker using the Cuorerosso to demonstrate how a flexible platform could accommodate several types of powertrain.

That points towards a future in which electric cars sit alongside petrol hybrids, allowing Alfa Romeo to respond to different customer needs and market conditions. For a brand with a long history of performance-focused engines, retaining that flexibility could prove important.

Alfa Romeo Cuorerosso design stands out

The Cuorerosso is a 2+2 concept with rear-hinged rear doors, an arrangement reminiscent of the Mazda RX-8. Its footprint is similar to that of the Giulia, but the lower body gives it a wider, more muscular appearance.

The exterior features a pointed nose, sharply sculpted surfaces and a high rear end that slopes in the opposite direction to a conventional fastback design. The result is a distinctive shape that looks more like a sporting coupe than a traditional saloon.

Alfa Romeo has stressed that the Cuorerosso is not the next Giulia. While its styling could influence future production cars, there is no confirmation that the concept's proportions or individual design features will make it into the showroom.

Alfa Romeo new cars expected through 2028

The Cuorerosso is part of a broader renewal programme, with several new models expected to arrive before replacements for the Giulia and Stelvio.

A new mid-size crossover is planned for 2027. Expected to be slightly larger than the Tonale, it will use a newer Stellantis platform and could give Alfa Romeo a stronger contender in the competitive family SUV market.

A hatchback is expected to follow in 2028, potentially acting as a spiritual successor to the Giulietta. Such a model would broaden the range and give buyers an alternative to the growing number of SUVs on offer.

The next Giulia and Stelvio are expected after those launches, with both fully electric and petrol-hybrid powertrains planned. Final specifications and launch dates have yet to be confirmed, so the precise timing remains uncertain.

Could the Cuorerosso shape future Alfa Romeo models?

Although the Cuorerosso is not a direct preview of the next Giulia, its design appears to have attracted attention within Alfa Romeo's senior management. Reports suggest the original plans for the new saloon included relatively few styling cues from the concept, but that could change following its unveiling.

If the Cuorerosso influences the wider range, it could help establish a more distinctive visual identity for Alfa Romeo's next generation of cars. That would be valuable as the brand seeks to stand apart from rivals in an increasingly crowded market.

Design alone will not be enough, however. Competitive pricing, practical interiors, efficient powertrains and strong everyday usability will all play a part in determining whether the new models succeed.

Alfa Romeo Cuorerosso verdict

The Cuorerosso is an encouraging sign for Alfa Romeo. Its hybrid V6 and four-wheel-drive layout suggest the brand still sees a place for performance-focused engineering, while its flexible platform points towards a more adaptable approach to future powertrains.

The concept should not be mistaken for a confirmed production car, and the next Giulia and Stelvio remain some way off. Yet with a new crossover and hatchback expected before their arrival, Alfa Romeo's line-up could look very different by the end of the decade.

The real test will be whether the company can turn the Cuorerosso's striking design and promising engineering ideas into affordable, desirable cars. If it can, Alfa Romeo's next chapter could be considerably more exciting than its recent past.
