We’re committed to a future where hydrogen is used by everyone, everywhere

Hyundai unveils new concept hydrogen fuel cell vehicle

Hyundai has revealed its latest hydrogen fuel cell concept vehicle, the INITIUM,  aiming for a driving range of over 403 miles and a motor output of 150 kW.

The INITIUM’s design, labeled "Art of Steel," previews Hyundai's upcoming production fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) set to debut in early 2025. With large hydrogen tanks, this vehicle could compete with top premium electric vehicles in terms of range.

Jaehoon Chang, Hyundai Motor Company’s CEO, expressed the brand’s dedication to hydrogen as a clean, accessible energy source for everyone, saying: “We’re committed to a future where hydrogen is used by everyone, everywhere. We invite you to join us on this journey.”

The INITIUM includes an FCEV-specific route planner to address charging infrastructure concerns, helping drivers find optimal routes and fueling stations. It also offers a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, allowing the vehicle to power household appliances and devices, with a 220V outlet for direct energy supply.

Safety features include a reinforced multi-skeleton structure, nine airbags, and additional side body protection, aimed at achieving high collision safety standards.

SangYup Lee, Hyundai’s Global Design Head, noted the challenges of the INITIUM’s creation: “Our goal was to push steel formability to its limits and create something strong and SUV-like. With ‘customer-centric design’ in mind, we aimed to blend safety and aesthetics.”

Hyundai, already a leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology with the Nexo—boasting a range of 414 miles and rapid refuelling—is advancing the field with a second-generation fuel cell, which is noted for consuming as little as one kilogram of hydrogen per 62 miles.
