MG is about to make some serious waves at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed with the reveal of a sleek new electric SUV, and it could finally give the Tesla Model Y some proper competition. It’s also set to go head-to-head with rivals like the Skoda Enyaq and XPeng G6.
So far, MG has only dropped a shadowy teaser of the car’s rear – but it looks almost identical to the MG IM6, a car already on sale in Australia and Thailand. That means we’re likely getting a rebranded version of the IM Motors LS6, an electric SUV from MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor. Never heard of IM Motors? Don’t worry, most people haven’t. It’s a premium EV brand in China, but in the UK, it looks like their cars will be badged as MGs instead.
In Australia, the MG IM6 comes in three trims: Premium, Platinum and Performance. The base model gets a 75kWh battery and a rear motor pushing out 291bhp – good for 280 miles of range and a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds. Decent. The top versions get even better, packing a 100kWh battery for up to 345 miles of range and ultra-fast 800V charging. That means if you find the right charger, you could go from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes – faster than a Porsche Taycan.
But here’s where it gets wild: the Performance model cranks things up to 767bhp and does 0-62mph in just 3.4 seconds – same as the hardcore Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. Inside, you get a massive 26.3-inch screen stretching across the dash, another 10.5-inch screen for controls, rear-wheel steering, clever air suspension and even one-touch self-parking tech. Whether all of that will come to the UK? Still unclear, but fingers crossed.
Oh, and MG’s not done yet. They’ll also be showing off another EV at Goodwood, likely the MG IM5 – a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal. That one promises up to 407 miles of range and does 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds.
Also making an appearance: the blacked-out MG Cyberster Black Edition and the massive MG Cyber X concept SUV. Looks like MG is ready to seriously shake up the EV game.
