UK achieves 50,000 EV charging points milestone with accelerated growth

Zapmap, the prominent charge point mapping service in the UK, has officially announced that the country has surpassed a remarkable 50,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points. The 50,000th charging device, an ultra-rapid unit, was recently installed at a service station in Weston-super-Mare and is operated by en-route provider MFG EV Power.

This milestone reflects substantial progress in two crucial aspects of the nation's charging infrastructure. According to Zapmap's recent quarterly statistics, the UK witnessed a 68% increase in ultra-rapid charge points since September 2022, accompanied by nearly a 68% rise in slow chargers.

The timing of this achievement underscores the accelerated pace of charge point installations in recent years. In October, the UK reached the 50,000 charge point milestone shortly after surpassing the 40,000 mark in February 2023, a feat accomplished by the GeniePoint network at Morrisons Southport.

Taking a retrospective glance, the UK hit 30,000 charging devices in February 2022 (bp pulse, Botany Bay), followed by the 20,000 mark in September 2020 (Pod Point, Tesco Superstore Scarborough). The 10,000 charging devices milestone was achieved in August 2018, marked by the installation of an InstaVolt device at Meadowfield Filling Station.

Looking ahead, Zapmap's projections indicate that, at the current installation rate, the UK is poised to reach an impressive 100,000 charging devices by August 2025. This optimistic outlook underscores the nation's commitment to fostering a robust and extensive EV charging infrastructure for the future.
