The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo has been officially announced. The revolutionary new model combines the style of a coupe, the luxury of a limousine, and the practicality of a family hatchback. Perhaps it also does the washing up.

The Gran Turismo is available in three versions. The 530d GT has a 3.0-litre six cylinder diesel engine generating 245bhp. The 535i GT has a more powerful (306bhp) 3.0-litre petrol, and the mighty 550i GT has a 4.4-litre V8 (407bhp). The 550i GT therefore reaches 62mph in 5.5 seconds and charges to an electronically limited 155mph.

One distinctive feature is the two-piece tailgate. This allows the rear to be opened as a saloon or hatchback to suit the items being stored. The rear seats also move forward and lay flat to increase storage capacity to 1,700 litres - the second largest in BMW's range.

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is on sale from October 2009. Prices are expected to start at £40,000.
