Government refuse to extend UK Scrappage Scheme

No scrappage scheme extension

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said the sales of the smallest new cars have increased the most in comparison with this time last year, there has been a 2.4 percent rise across the UK selling new cars which is the first increase since April last year.

Almost 200,000 new cars have been registered under the scrappage scheme but the Government has confirmed that it will not be adding any more money to the pot to extend it. July and August saw sales growth for the first time in over a year, prompting calls by some carmakers and business groups to extend the scheme, which is due to end either in March 2010 or when the £300m pot runs dry. The US has replenished their Cash for Clunkers similar scheme and it was hoped the UK would follow suit but Lord Mandelson says the Government have no plans for extending the scheme at present.
