The latest Vauxhall Meriva is clearly out to compete with the bigger boys. The latest model is bigger than the original model and today’s Meriva is more appealing to look at. The sculpted shape follows many of the design themes seen on the Astra hatch with a cutaway section in the flanks and a distinctive front end sporting huge headlamps that smear back along the edges of the bonnet.

The most powerful diesel engine offered is the 1.7 litre engine which has a six speed manual gearbox as standard, a six speed auto is also available on this range topping diesel. The major innovation with the Vauxhall Meriva is the novel door arrangement. The FlexDoors are rear hinged doors which swing open towards the back of the car at an angle of 90 degrees. This improves the ease with which occupants enter and leave the vehicle, rather than having to step back or to the side as with normal front hinged doors. The interior is based around the FlexSpace seating system which allows the rear seats to fold down and slide individually.

The Vauxhall Meriva is a practical car for families, with a large boot space for prams, shopping or golf clubs with optional added extras such as full length panoramic sunroof, satellite navigation including USB with iPod control and 18 inch alloys wheels. Standard features include electric park brake, ABS, electric windows, twin front air bags and ISOFIX child seat restraint system for outer rear seats.
