Two of China’s leading car manufacturers, Omoda and Jaecoo, have introduced a groundbreaking hybrid system to the UK. Known as the Super Hybrid System (SHS), this innovation is being hailed as a "true alternative" to fully electric vehicles.
The SHS makes its debut in the JAECOO 7 SHS, now available for purchase across the UK. With an impressive WLTP fuel economy of 403 mpg and a range of 745 miles, the vehicle sets a new standard in hybrid performance. Developed by the Chery Group using third-generation hybrid technology, the SHS combines traditional fuel with electric power to deliver ultra-low carbon emissions of just 23 g/km, leading its class in environmental efficiency.
One standout feature of the SHS is its ability to maintain battery charge, ensuring the battery "never drops to zero percent." This technology marks a significant shift away from traditional plug-in hybrid systems and prioritizes battery safety.
The JAECOO 7 SHS boasts ultra-high thermal efficiency and extended range capabilities, reflecting the manufacturers' commitment to practical, everyday usability. Its advanced hybrid system delivers both top-notch performance and exceptional fuel economy, setting new benchmarks for the automotive industry.
Peter Matkin, Chief Engineer at JAECOO and Head of Engineering for Chery Group, explained:
“The rapid growth of new energy vehicles continues worldwide, with plug-in hybrids playing a key role. The SHS enhances the driving experience and fuel efficiency, thanks to innovative engineering. JAECOO engineers have fine-tuned Chery’s hybrid technology to provide a real alternative to pure electric vehicles.”
The JAECOO 7 SHS powertrain consists of three key components, including a fifth-generation 1.5-litre TDGI petrol engine delivering 143 bhp and 215 Nm of torque. This is paired with an 18.3 kW lithium iron phosphate battery, which offers an electric-only range of 56 miles. The battery’s triple-layer design maximises impact resistance, reinforcing Omoda and Jaecoo's focus on safety.
The JAECOO 7 premium SUV is priced at £29,435 for the petrol version or £35,065 for the SHS powertrain. Deliveries in the UK are set to begin on January 31.
