The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be launched this autumn with prices to be confirmed nearer the time. Both torque-rich engines have towing in mind, with the 208bhp diesel producing 398lb.ft from 1,600rpm, and the 5.5-litre, 537bhp twin-turbo petrol option offering an impressive 561lb.ft from 2,000rpm. They have achieved 25.2mpg and 20.4mpg respectively in the European standard fuel economy tests, with CO2 emissions of 295g/km and 322g/km.
The G-Class can be specified with parking sensors, radar-guided cruise control and blind spot warnings. Internet connectivity is on hand with Mercedes’ COMAND Online setup that includes a navigation system specially adapted with off-road functions.
Despite the technological advances and more obviously styled interior, some of the design cues that defined the original have been kept, so that the heritage link is as clear to buyers as possible.
