One in five people are planning a caravan or camping holiday according to a survey carried out by Nissan. The survey also revealed that only 20% of carvanners had only taken up towing in the last six months and that 40% who tow caravans, trailers or boats have never had training on how to do it safely.
As a result of the survey, Nissan has launched a free guide to towing, available from its dealerships nationwide, and will also hold a series of free courses across the UK for customers who purchase one of its Nissan X-Trail or Pathfinder models before September 30. It is also offering a 16% discount on X-Trails and Pathfinders to members of the Caravan Club.
Top towing tips from Nissan begin with checking you are legally allowed to tow as requirements differ according to when your licence was issued. Check the vehicle handbook for your towing limit as well as the maximum braked and unbraked towing weights. When towing Nissan advise to allow more time and space for acceleration and braking and when approaching an incline select a lower gear in good time. Going uphill this provides extra power. Going down it reduces the strain on your vehicle's brakes. It is also important to know the speed limits (60mph on motorways and dual carriageways and 50mph on single carriageways unless otherwise stated).
