A black Ford Escort RS Turbo that was owned and driven by Princess Diana sold at the Silverstone auctions over the weekend.

The car, that was famously pictured with the Princess of Wales on numerous occasions around South West London, was a favourite of Diana’s an unsurprisingly went for an eye-watering sum.

Diana often preferred to drive her own car with a member of the Royalty Protection Command (SO14) in the passenger seat, opposed to being driven around.

As a result, she was able rack up a few miles on the Escort which today has just over 24,000 on the clock. Admittedly a low amount for an 80s car, but this one has been parked away for decades.

It’s believed the Escort is unique in that it is the only black RS Turbo Series 1, as agreed by S014 and the Ford PR department to help it blend in, opposed to stand out like an all-white model.

Before being delivered to the Princess, the car had a five-slat front grille fitted alongside a secondary rear-view mirror for the protection officer with a radio in the glove box.

In June 2021, another Ford Escort used by Diana sold at auction for £52,000 – I’m sure the owner of that one may be scratching their head a touch.
