The Range Rover Voque offers two engine options a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrol and a 4.4-litre V8 turbodiesel. There's no surprise the petrol engine's emissions push it into the top company car tax band, but the diesel is in the same category. Both engines have a thirst for fuel.
The Mercedes-Benz GL offers a 5.5 litre V8, a 3.0 litre V6 turbodiesel and a muscular 4.0 litre V8 diesel which almost matches the petrol V8 for pace with slightly better fuel economy. The Mercedes-Benz GL is fitted with large tyres and a host of four wheel drive equipment so very little noise enters the cabin. Road noise in the Range Rover Vogue is well filtered out, but the Range Rover's large, upright body creates some wind noise at motorway pace.
The interior of the Mercedes-Benz GL has ample headroom and legroom although access to the rear most seats could be better. The rear doors open wide but entry is from one side as the large portion of the 60/40 split middle row does not fall forward. With seats in place boot space is limited but flipping the seats creates a flat loadbay. The Range Rover Voque is also a roomy car but again getting into the back isn’t as easy as you think, all passengers have decent head and leg room and the boot is spacious.
Every Mercedes-Benz GL is fitted with cruise control, climate control, four electric windows, a seven-speed automatic gearbox and alloy wheels. Off-roading technology including hill descent control, low-ratio gears, locking centre and rear differentials and adjustable ground clearance is also standard. All Range Rover versions have high standard specifications with cruise and climate controls, a CD multichanger, alloy wheels and leather trim. The clever dual-view display screen is standard on most models.
