The SKODA Fabia vRS Estate just slapped my neighbour in the face - and rightly so. He scoffed at the 'SKODA' badge, mocked the Fabia's image, and cried with laughter when he spotted 'vRS' markings on a practical estate car. Mistake! Why? Because this load- lugger rockets to 62mph in a teeth shattering 7.3 seconds and races to a jaw-cracking 140mph. That is not what my neighbour expected from ŠKODA - or a 'mild' looking estate. The SKODA Fabia vRS has a 1.4-litre petrol engine that produces 180PS, and 184lb ft of torque. This power is sent to the front wheels via seven-speed DSG auto transmission. However, enthusiastic drivers can flick between the cogs manually too on a semi-auto basis. The Fabia vRS also has sharp steering, a rock-solid chassis, and reasonable ride. No wonder it takes no prisoners – and no wonder my neighbour now has nine new fillings. This brings us to practicality. The SKODA Fabia vRS Estate carries five people (not including my neighbour) plus 505-litres of luggage. Dumping a few passengers and folding the rear seats flat increases cargo space to 1,485-litres. That is substantial for a compact car. Running costs are pleasing too, as it averages 45.6mpg and can be taxed annually for £135. And the price? How does £17,840 sound? Better than a slap, I suspect.
