Volkswagen’s famous Passat looks to be set for a new life when the new model is launched in 2023 after the German powerhouse confirmed production will begin on an all-new B9 generation.
It’s expected the model, which began life back in 1972 will either be adopted as a hatchback or estate in a shift from the saloon model which has been the feature Passat since the late 80s. The 2019 model being pictured above.
The new Passat will be built in Bratislava, alongside the Touareg SUV after being moved from its traditional home in Emden, Germany, to make way for the ID.4 SUV and production versions of the ID.Vizzion saloon and ID. Space Vizzion estate.
It is believed the Passat could be one of the last newly designed cars to offer a diesel engine, despite take up of diesels dropping significantly in recent years and that trend showing no sign of slowing.
There will still be petrol and plug-in hybrid options with the latter’s electric-only range believed to be around 60 miles.
