The Kona from Hyundai has been on sale since 2017 and the car has already proven to be a success here in the UK as well as across Europe with more than 228,000 units sold across the continent. Hyundai has now announced that they’re going to be building on this success by introducing some enhancements to the Kona as well as introducing a brand new N Line sporty-spec to further spice up the trim levels.
The most notable improvement will be the refreshing of powertrain options as Hyundai will now include 48-volt mild-hybrid technology to all of their diesel engines across the range and it will be an option on the 1.0 litre T0GDI petrol engine. The infotainment and onboard technology will also be given a big boost as Hyundai introduce their latest Bluelink technology set which improves connectivity and convenience features for the owner.
One area of huge improvement from Hyundai is the Kona’s new safety and driving assistance functionalities. Blind-spot collision avoidance has been improved to apply the differential brakes in order to prevent a collision if another vehicle is detected near the blind spot while the driver is changing lanes. Another feature which is new to the Kona is LVDA - Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, which notifies a driver if they do not respond quickly enough if the car in front sets off, say in traffic or at a red light.
The Kona N Line
The most appealing update that Hyundai has introduced is certainly the new N Line specification, which takes styling cues from the ‘N’ performance range from Hyundai and adds them to the underpinnings of the economical and sustainable Kona. Think of the likes of Audi’s ‘S Line’ models, BMW’s ‘M-Sport’ models and Ford’s ST-Line models - it’s a similar concept here with Hyundais N Line. Sporty in appearance, but frugal in performance. A healthy balance between style and substance.
So what is the difference? Firstly you’ll notice the lower half of the front bumper is now body-coloured, instead of protective plastic. This immediately gives the front profile of the car more presence on the roads and that effect is compounded by the rear bumper which now hosts a central aerodynamic rear diffuser with dual exhaust.
From the side view, you’ll notice that both the front and rear wheel arches are no longer clad in protective plastic, instead the body colour extends all the way to the edges which give the car a more premium and prominent appearance.
And finally, the real icing on the cake is the stunning diamond-cut wheels which are only made available on the N Line models, making these cars immediately identifiable.
