Kimi Antonelli made history at the Shanghai International Circuit, securing his maiden Formula 1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix. The 19-year-old Italian led a dominant Mercedes 1-2, with teammate George Russell finishing second, and Lewis Hamilton claiming his first Grand Prix podium for Ferrari in third.

Antonelli's impressive performance saw him become the second youngest driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix. He was only briefly headed at the start of Sunday's race, losing the lead to Hamilton, who had surged from P3. Antonelli quickly re-took the lead before the end of the second lap and maintained his position after his only pit stop under an early Safety Car period. Despite a tense moment with four laps remaining when he ran deep at Turn 14, Antonelli finished 5.5 seconds ahead of Russell.

Russell, who had already claimed victory in Saturday's Sprint race, fought back to second after initially dropping behind the Ferraris. He found himself amidst midfield traffic after pitting under the Safety Car but utilised the pace of his car to recover his position. Lewis Hamilton's third-place finish marked his first rostrum for Ferrari at the same circuit where he secured his only victory in last season's China Sprint. Hamilton had engaged in an early tussle for the lead in the Sprint with Russell before ultimately ceding positions.

The race weekend began with George Russell topping the sole practice session (FP1), setting the pace ahead of Antonelli and McLaren’s Lando Norris. The session was busy, featuring a spin for Franco Colapinto and a spin for Hamilton at Turn 6. Both Virtual Safety Car periods were deployed during FP1, one for debris and another when Arvid Lindblad's Racing Bulls pulled off track.

Sprint Qualifying saw Russell clinch pole position, with Antonelli ensuring a Mercedes front-row lockout. Russell's 1m 31.520s on soft tyres was nearly three-tenths clear of Antonelli. Reigning World Champion Lando Norris was third, with Hamilton in fourth. The Sprint race itself was won by Russell, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Hamilton. Antonelli, who suffered a poor start from the front row in the Sprint, received a 10-second penalty after a collision with Isack Hadjar on the opening lap.

In Saturday's Grand Prix Qualifying, Antonelli made history by becoming F1's youngest ever Grand Prix polesitter, beating Sebastian Vettel’s record from the 2008 Italian Grand Prix. He out-qualified Russell by 0.222 seconds with a 1m 32.064s. Russell had faced a car issue in Q3, bringing him to a brief halt on track, but he recovered to set a single flying lap. Ferrari locked out the second row, with Hamilton just ahead of Charles Leclerc.

The Red Bull team had a challenging Sprint race, with Max Verstappen calling his experience 'a disaster' after recovering to only ninth. Verstappen struggled with a poor start, citing a lack of power, and later experienced terrible balance and higher degradation than his competitors. His teammate Isack Hadjar also faced difficulties, colliding with Antonelli on the opening lap and driving with damage, eventually finishing P15.

Post-race, Kimi Antonelli expressed his emotions, stating, “I’m speechless. I’m about to cry, to be honest… Thank you so much to my team because they helped me to achieve this dream."

George Russell extended his congratulations to his teammate, saying, “Huge congratulations to Kimi on his first win, you drove great today. Pleasure to share the podium…”

Russell continues to lead the Drivers' Championship with 51 points, followed by Antonelli with 47 points, Charles Leclerc with 34 points, and Lewis Hamilton with 33 points.

The next race on the 2026 calendar is the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka International Racing Course on 29th March 2026.
