Get ready for MG's all-new MGS5 EV, a stylish and practical small SUV offering impressive range, cutting-edge design, and a competitive price tag

MG’s MGS5 EV: The affordable, all-electric SUV

MG is about to reveal its next-generation all-electric small SUV in just a few weeks, and it's called the MGS5 EV. This new model will go head-to-head with competitors like the Skoda Elroq, Kia EV3, and Hyundai Kona Electric, and will share the same platform as the award-winning MG4 hatchback. From the teaser images, it looks like it’ll feature a sleek full-width light bar and Y-shaped tail-lights, taking inspiration from the MG4’s design.

Although we got a sneak peek of the MGS5 last year in China, where it’s known as the MG ES5, the version coming to Europe will have a slightly different look. Expect to see some familiar styling cues, including the large chrome MG badge and the signature rear light design, but with a more refined front end and added features like slimmer headlights, black plastic cladding, and roof rails.

Inside, MG promises a “completely reimagined premium cabin” for the MGS5, boasting an impressive touchscreen and high-quality features that cater to European tastes. It’s set to be more spacious too, with the MGS5 being longer, wider, and lower than the ZS EV, making it a practical choice. In fact, at 4,476mm long, it’s around 120mm longer than the latest Kona Electric, plus its wheelbase is 70mm longer for added comfort and room.

When it comes to power, the MGS5 will offer several battery and motor options, similar to the MG4. The base model is expected to feature a 51kWh battery, delivering a range of just over 200 miles, while the longer-range version could top 300 miles with a 77kWh battery. With rear-wheel drive as standard, the MGS5 could also offer an all-wheel-drive variant, thanks to the platform's ability to support dual-motor configurations, like the MG4 XPower.

As for price, MG hopes to launch the MGS5 at a starting price below £30,000, which would undercut rivals like the Skoda Elroq (£31,500), Kia EV3 (£33,000), and Hyundai Kona Electric (around £35,000). This makes the MGS5 a serious contender in the growing electric SUV market. MG is also keeping an eye on new players entering the market, anticipating fierce competition from both established and emerging brands.

Looking ahead, MG is planning an even larger electric SUV for 2025, targeting models like the Skoda Enyaq and Renault Scenic. This mid-size SUV, which will also use the MSP platform, is set to replace the MG Marvel R (currently available in mainland Europe), offering an even bigger and more premium option for those looking to upgrade. MG is keeping the name of this SUV under wraps for now, but it’s clear that the brand is looking to make a major impact in the EV market in the coming years.
