MG’s new IM5 is faster than a Tesla Model 3 — and cheaper

The MG IM5 is stylish, tech-packed, and charges from 10–80% in 17 minutes. Can it really beat Tesla at its own game?

You probably know MG for making budget-friendly runarounds, but things are getting serious. The brand, now backed by Chinese giant SAIC, is moving into premium territory with two new models: the IM6 SUV and this sleek all-electric saloon, the IM5.

Set to launch in the UK this September, the IM5 is gunning for the Tesla Model 3, Kia EV4, BYD Seal and Hyundai Ioniq 6. Three versions are coming:

  • Standard (£39,450)
  • Long Range (£44,995)
  • Performance (£48,495)

Even the entry-level model undercuts a Tesla Model 3 and comes loaded. A 20-speaker sound system, 10.5-inch touchscreen, massive 26.3-inch dash display, heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting, panoramic roof, wireless charging, the lot.

There’s no MG badge, though. This is from IM Motors, MG’s high-end sub-brand from China. It was going to launch on its own, but is now rolling out under the MG name to give it more clout in the UK.

On the tech side, the IM5 is built on a brand-new 800V EV platform. That means seriously fast charging — 10 to 80 per cent in just 17 minutes. Here’s how the specs stack up:

  • Standard comes with a 75kWh battery, 304 miles of range, 0 to 62mph in 6.8 seconds
  • Long Range gets a 100kWh battery, 441 miles, 0 to 62mph in 4.9 seconds
  • Performance adds dual motors, 741bhp, 0 to 62mph in just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 166mph

There’s also rear-wheel steering (it helps with tight turns), two wheel options (19s or 20s), and some fun launch colours including Arctic White, Nevis Blue, Rembrandt Grey and Black Pearl.

The IM5 is already on sale in Australia under the clunky name “IM Presented by MG Motor” - but don’t worry, we’re just calling it the IM5 here.

MG says it’s tailored the IM5’s handling to suit European roads, with final tweaks made in Birmingham. In other words, it’s not just fast in a straight line; it’s fun to drive too.

If you’re in the market for a premium EV without the Tesla tax, this could be a real one to watch.
