Could the Ford Fiesta return as an electric car? Rumours are swirling about a surprise comeback thanks to a new Ford and Volkswagen partnership. Here’s what we know so far.

The Ford Fiesta might be coming back – but not how you remember it!

The Ford Fiesta might not be dead for good. Even though production officially ended in July 2023, there’s talk it could return — this time as an electric car — thanks to a growing partnership between Ford and Volkswagen.

The two brands have already teamed up once, with Ford using VW’s electric tech to build the new Explorer and Capri models. And now, VW’s sales boss Martin Sander has hinted that more collaborations could be on the way. He called their first project “very successful” and didn’t rule out future tech-sharing deals.

That’s where the Fiesta could come in. Ford might use VW’s upcoming MEB Entry platform — the same one planned for the compact ID.1 and ID.2 EVs — to bring back a small, affordable electric car with up to 280 miles of range and fast charging up to 125kW.

Ford is in a tricky spot right now. The Puma is still selling well, but its £26,500+ price tag makes it less of a budget option. And with the Fiesta and Focus being phased out, it’s clear Ford is moving away from cheaper city cars – mostly because they’re just not that profitable anymore.

There’s also talk of a secret Ford team in California working on a new budget EV platform, but early signs point to it being more focused on pickup trucks than small cars.

We’ll likely know more later this year. Ford says it’ll update everyone on its EV strategy and future plans in the first half of 2025. So stay tuned — the Fiesta might just make a comeback after all.
