A guide to the most affordable new electric cars in the UK, including MG, BYD, Omoda and Fiat models under £30,000.

The lowest-priced new EVs you can buy in the UK right now

For a long time, electric cars were seen as something only drivers with big budgets could afford. Today that is no longer the case. A growing number of affordable models are arriving in the UK, giving drivers more choice than ever. Below £30,000 you can now buy an electric car with a good range, useful features and space for everyday life.

MG4 EV

The MG4 is one of the strongest value options on sale today. Prices start at around £26,000 and the 51kWh battery provides up to 218 miles of range. A larger 64kWh option is also available, which increases the range to 280 miles. Inside, the MG4 has a 10.25 inch touchscreen, modern driver assistance systems and space for families. MG’s seven year warranty makes it even more attractive.

BYD Dolphin

The Dolphin from BYD starts at £26,195 and brings a 211 mile range. The car has a roomy cabin, a clear infotainment system and good levels of safety technology as standard. A long range version is also available, making the Dolphin flexible for buyers who want more miles between charges. It is slightly bigger than the MG4, which makes it a practical choice for young families.

Omoda E5

The Omoda E5 will soon join the UK market and is expected to start at under £30,000. It uses a 61kWh battery that should give up to 280 miles of range, which would be excellent at this price. Inside, the E5 features large digital screens, connected services and a design that is both modern and bold. Omoda is aiming to bring affordable style to drivers who want value but also care about technology and looks. The E5 could be one of the most exciting new entries in this price bracket.

Fiat 500e

The Fiat 500e starts at £28,195 and is aimed at city drivers. The smaller 24kWh battery has a range of about 118 miles, while the larger 42kWh version stretches that to more than 190 miles. It is compact, easy to park and keeps the charm of the petrol 500, but it is less suitable for long trips.

More choice than ever

Drivers looking for an affordable EV now have plenty of options. MG and BYD have proven their value, Fiat offers a stylish city car and Omoda is preparing to raise the bar with the E5. More competition at this level means lower prices and better cars for everyone.
