The Ford Focus remains the most popular car on sale in the UK, with 83,727 registrations so far this year.
According to figures issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the Vauxhall Astra is in its customary second place on 69,119, followed by the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa (which actually outsold the Fiesta in July), Volkswagen Golf and Peugeot 207.
Take company cars out of the equation and the list looks quite different. In terms of private sales the Fiesta is well out in front, followed by the Corsa, 207, Focus, MINI and Renault Clio.
The proportion of diesel cars registered in this country hit 41.2% in July, the strongest performance since January. The most popular diesel last month was the Volkswagen Passat, though the Focus is in the lead for the year as a whole.
