Is the new Vauxhall Astra a rival for the Volkswagen Golf, well Vauxhall seem to think so. The range starts with the Vauxhall Astra Exclusiv 1.4i (87PS) which now offers air conditioning, electronic stability control, 16 inch wheels and MP3 format radio/CD player as standard, this model is priced at £15,675. The new range moves on to the Vauxhall Astra Sri 1.4i Turbo which features electronic parking brake, centre armrest and active head restraints all standard.

The diesel Vauxhall Astra Exclusiv 1.7 CDTi 110PS is now more powerful and priced at £18,015, this model boasts a reduction of 11g/km in CO2 emissions.

The Vauxhall Astra will also be available with a version of the Insignia’s FlexRide system an electronic damper control programme with the same Standard, Sport and Tour settings. Other Insignia carryover technology includes the Adaptive Forward Lighting system, which adjusts the headlight beam according to weather conditions and road layout, and the road sign recognition system.

Vauxhall dealers' order books are now open for the new Vauxhall Astra, with the first cars available in showrooms from December 2009.
