The new Toyota IQ has parked in Motoring.co.uk's Twelve Cars of Christmas list in position nine. This comprehensive concoction is a record of our favourite vehicles based on economy, space, price, style, and popularity. So, what appeals about this pint-sized city car?

The fashionable IQ was introduced in 2009 and is the smallest four-seater in the UK. Despite its length of only three metres this likeable vehicle sits two adults in absolute comfort. However, rear passengers are less cosseted and Christmas bargain hunters may struggle to fit shopping into the tiny 32-litre boot.

To be consistent with its microscopic proportions the IQ comes with a choice of two tiny engines. The leisurely 1.0-litre 68bhp returns a combined average of 65mpg, and the faster 1.3-litre 96bhp achieves 58mpg. This modest fuel consumption means carbon emissions are actually low enough to be comparable to Santa's favourite reindeer. The 1.0-litre is therefore exempt from paying road tax and the 1.3-litre sits in tax band C/£35. The Toyota IQ deserves its place on the Christmas list because it is distinctive and capable – even though it may struggle to pull Santa's heavy sleigh. Many city cars are horrendous misery boxes but the IQ's confident handling, comfortable ride, and robust construction make it a welcome exception.

New prices range from £9,763 - £14,878 on-the-road.
