The zone will cover most of Newcastle city centre and routes over the Tyne, Swing, High Level, and Redheugh Bridges.

Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone: which vehicles will be charged?

There will be no charge to enter if you have a private car or motorcycle – irrespective of its emissions. In contrast if you drive a taxi, private hire vehicle, light goods vehicle, heavy goods vehicle, bus, or coach that cannot meet a minimum emission standard you will be charged. The table below reveals which standard your vehicle will have to meet to enter the zone for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Newcastle Clean Air Zone charges will be introduced in phases. If you have a non-compliant taxi, private hire vehicle, bus, coach, or heavy goods vehicle you will pay from January 30th 2023. In contrast, you pay from July 2023 if you have a light goods vehicle.

The charge will be £12.50 per day if your taxi, private hire vehicle, or light goods vehicle cannot meet its emission standard. This will increase to £50 for a bus, coach, or heavy goods vehicle.

Charges will apply 24 hours a day, everyday. Payments will be taken online.

The zone will cover most of Newcastle city centre and routes over the Tyne, Swing, High Level, and Redheugh Bridges.

The Clean Air Zone will be marked by 43 signs at its entry points, and more within. There will be signs on the approaching roads, too.

You might get a grant if you cannot afford to switch to a newer, more eco-friendly vehicle. Details will be available in due course.
