Sheffield Clean Air Zone: which vehicles will be charged?

There will be no charge if you have a private car or motorbike, however high its emissions. However, you will pay if your taxi, private hire vehicle, light goods vehicle, heavy goods vehicle, bus, or coach cannot meet a minimum standard. The table shows which emission standard your vehicle will have to meet to avoid a charge.

The Sheffield Clean Air Zone launches in spring 2023.

The Sheffield Clean Air Zone will cover the inner ring road and city centre. Prominent buildings in this zone will include Peter and St Paul’s Cathedral, Sheffield College, and Springfield School.

The Sheffield Clean Air Zone charge will be £10 per day for a non-compliant taxi, private hire vehicle, or light goods vehicle. This will rise to £50 a day for your bus, coach, or heavy goods vehicle.

Charges will apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Your Sheffield Clean Air Zone charge will be paid online, via credit or debit card. Do so within seven days of entering to avoid the penalty charge. Sheffield City Council explained that your money can then ‘only be spent’ to cover the cost of running the zone and on other ‘projects that reduce air pollution’ in the city.

There will be no charge to enter if you have a private car or motorcycle – irrespective of its emissions. In contrast if you drive a taxi, private hire vehicle, light goods vehicle, heavy goods vehicle, bus, or coach that cannot meet a minimum emission standard you will be charged. The emission standards are Euro 6 for diesel vehicles and Euro 4 for Petrol.

Financial support may be available to help you or your business pay for a newer, more eco-friendly, lower emission vehicle. You might get a grant, an interest subsidised loan, or a combination of both.
